Hieroglyphs From The Soul

Robert Place sees the Tarot as a spiritual tool that works, through its archetypal images, to assist our Higher Self to guide us to enlightened choices and spiritual wisdom. He recommends three card readings as a Tarot staple, and sets out a guideline for interpreting them called “The Seven Patterns.” These patterns include: linear, choice, central origin, central destination, the central problem and the central teacher.

The course will include an introduction to the method, description of the patterns, and sample readings. For the three card spread. Class notes will be provided in advance to illustrate the patterns. The Rider Waite Smith Tarot and Alchemical Tarot will be used.

The Relationship Spread

12/12/07 – 6:00 – 8:00 PST

Tarot readers are most commonly asked for advice about love or career. By treating these questions as a relationship between the querent and another person, company, or institution this spread can handle both topics. This spread can be applied to relationships between the querent and a lover, a boss, or another person, a job, a home, a culture, a city, or another environment. Instead of predicting the future, it gives insight into what each party is thinking and how they are interacting. Then the cards can provide insight from the Higher Self and tell the querent how to improve the relationship or other advice. This is a truly versatile spread that is capable of bringing insight and guidance to any situation.

The class will include an introduction to the spread, the three stages of relationships and how they relate to the Tarot trumps, and sample readings. This class builds on the lessons learned in Hieroglyphs From The Soul and will expand on the three-card reading.

Class notes will be provided in advance to illustrate the patterns. The Rider Waite Smith Tarot and The Alchemical Tarot will be used.

The Four Elements and the Four Functions of Consciousness

1/9/08 – 6:00 – 8:00 PST

The famous Swiss Psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, is best known for his theories about the unconscious mind but Jung mapped the conscious mind as well. In the conscious mind he found a mandala of four personality types that he called functions. Although Jung started by examining the four humors of classical medicine, he quickly realized that they did not describe true psychological states. He replaced them with the four qualities that he did discover in the human psyche and labeled these qualities: thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition. Although Jung veered away from the theory of the humors, it is still possible to make a connection between his four functions and the four elements of the alchemists and through this connection to link them with the four minor suits in the Tarot.

This class will explore the symbolism of the four minor suits and demonstrate that they contain a mandala like structure that relates to the four directions, seasons, elements, and other fourfold systems including the four Jungian functions. We will learn more about the functions through examples and each student will attempt to discover their dominant function. Through their relationship with the functions, the cards become a valuable psychological tool that can point out difference in personality and harmonize relationships between different personality types.

Dream Divination

1/23/08 & 1/30/08 – 6:00 – 8:00 PST
$50

We spend about one third of our lives sleeping. When you are asleep you are naturally communicating with the unconscious part of your mind, where the archetypes live and your dreams are that communication. The ability to dream evolved in mammals about 130 million years ago. Like all mammals, humans dream and have always dreamed as long as they have been around. It is not surprising, therefore, that dreams are the oldest and most natural form of divination. They are also one of the most insightful and reliable. Dreams can heal us mentally and physically, they can teach us, they are a source of inspiration, and they can predict the future.

In these two classes we will learn about ancient oneiromanic practices and the modern theories of Jung. We will learn about the principle archetypes and some common dream symbols. We will learn how to remember dreams and we will make use of the methods devised by psychiatrist Montague Ullman to hold a group dream discussion. Bring a pad and pencil and some dreams.

Vampires and the Tarot

2/13/08 – 6:00 – 8:00 PST
$25.00

Although the Vampire of modern literature and film is a blood sucking monster he or she is also the focus of sexual desire. This is exemplified by the fact that although Bela Lugosi made his reputation playing Dracula, the most famous vampire fiend, women all over the world swooned for him and he received hundreds of proposals of marriage. This paradox illuminates the fact that the modern Vampire of pop culture, particularly Dracula, is in reality an ancient mythological figure who has covertly entered a culture that is consciously attempting to cut itself off from myth. The story of this mythological Vampire is also related to the Tarot trumps.

Stoker’s biographer, Barbara Belford, points out that Dracula author Bram Stoker, was aware of the Tarot and seems to have based many of the characters in Dracula on Tarot trumps. In this lecture we will explore how and why this is so and find out why Pamela Coleman Smith and Stoker were friends, who influenced who, and if Stoker was a member of the Golden Dawn. We will also find that an appreciation of Dracula can deepen out understanding of Tarot symbolism.

Digital Photo Album Tarot by Graham Glover

Leisa’s first iPhone reading. Photo taken by Paul ReFalo on his iPhone.

Implementing a Tarot function on the iPhone is pretty simple and simplistic, but for what it does it works fairly well I think. In a nutshell, you upload a complete set of Tarot card images to the iPhone and let the iPhone shuffle them for display as a slide show. Without doing anything else, you get the iPhone to give you a quick card of the day, and you can set your card as a wallpaper image to be revisited throughout the day. Here’s how I did it on my MacBook. (It should be similar if you have a Windows machine.)

Using the iPhone for Tarot

Select the Photos button from the main menu of the iPhone. Select your Tarot deck. You’ll see an arrow at the bottom of the screen. Select it. iPhone will randomly select an image from your deck. You can touch the image to keep it from continuing to “play” as a slide
show.

When you touch the image, you’ll see an icon at the bottom left of the screen, a rectangle with an arrow. If you touch it, you’ll see you have the option, “Use As Wallpaper” which you may choose. You may wish to “squeeze” the image to get it properly sized for your iPhone.

This seems to work very well for a card of the day function, assuming you accept having a computer shuffle the deck. Also, if you wanted to do more complicated spreads, you could let more cards be shown in the slide show and use pen and paper to map the cards to a spread. You’d might wish to change the Settings> Photos> “Play Each Slide For” setting to greater than the default 3 seconds, though you can always stop the slide show by touching the image.

Card Images

I have a directory of card images I uploaded to my iPhone. In the Mac application iPhoto, it’s a “library” I called Tarot. I took the images from here:

The first link is the main page, which also includes a statement of the source of the cards. According to the text near the bottom of the page, this specific set is in the public domain. The second link is an online version of “THE PICTORIAL KEY TO THE TAROT”. If you view any of the card pages and click on the line image, you’ll get the full color scanned image, an example of which is shown in the third link.

I have the complete set of images from here. Depending on how Unix compatible you are, wgetw ith will to grab the relevant directory. You can also click and save each of the 78 images. Alternatively, you can use scans of whatever deck(s) you have, but you should have a complete deck in a “library”. When you sync your iPhone, make sure you include your Tarot image library.

iPhone SETTINGS

From the main menu of the iPhone, select the Settings button. Scroll down to Photos and select that. At the bottom of the list, select ON for Shuffle.

References

I have a couple sites bookmarked for references to specific cards. In this way if I wish to look up the meaning of a card, I simply go to Safari, choose my bookmark, and go to my specific card. The link above to “THE PICTORIAL KEY” is one; the other I use is here: www.learntarot.com/cards.htm

Why I Did It

I have a few decks, but most times when I read I’m away from them. I wrote a command line Python program to do readings while at work. Mostly I do single card readings, but occasionally I’ll do more involved spreads.

In a few days I’ll be traveling with my family. While I could bring a card deck, I thought, “Why not see if I can do something with the iPhone?” Now I have a simple little system on my iPhone that works quite nicely and requires no modifications whatsoever to s/w.

Is it lame to do it that way? I don’t know. I hope not. I like it, and it seems to work for me.

Cosmic Poufball Reading

Here’s the link to the Cosmic Poufball Spread over at the Tarot Channel.

Below is a sample reading for you. I did this with drawing cards on the iPhone, so there are no reversals.

1. If you’re going out tonight…

VIII of Cups. Boring! This says to me that you won’t get much satisfaction from going out and doing something that was fun in the past. You’ve done it, it was fun, it’s time to move on and do something different. Restlessness is what you may find. I give it a 4 for going out tonight.

2. If you’re staying in…

XIX Sun. What a card. You’ll find joy and energy in whatever you do at home tonight. Cook. Dine. Spend time with special people in your life. Create something. It’s a good night for all of those things. I’ll give it a 9.

3. If you’re working…

XXI The World. Everything comes together, and all the pieces fit. You’re in control and you can look at your work in the satisfaction that everything is going well. It’s a 10 if you’re working tonight.

4. Overall?

IX Cups. For me, this is the Reality Card, the one that says, “Don’t get too cocky.” It can be a great night, but there’s never a guarantee. Things can go well, but you need to pay attention. Still, it’s a good card for a good night, so I’ll give it an 8 overall.

But remember, it’s a wise person who rules the cards, it’s a fool who’s ruled by them. – ^_^

Graham Glover

Graham has been working with Tarot for the last five years. He was first introduced to it through a Wiccan Witch.

He has written a command line program in Python to do Tarot readings when at work, and realized the iPhone could be easily adapted to do Tarot readings anywhere at any time.

He works in technology, and his real-world business card shows him as a Mathemagician. He lives with his wife, daughter, and guinea pig in Virginia.

Seven of Cups with the Portland Tarot Study Group

Excerpt from a Portland Study Group session on the Sevens.

One thing that I like to do when the 7 of Cups comes up in a reading is to ask the Querent to pick one of the cups. This may give insight into the situation or advice. Each of the Cups corresponds to a planet/major arcana card.

Play along, and choose one for yourself.

If you know this material or have difficulty selecting a card take out the planetary trumps, shuffle them and draw a card that way.

Planetary Trumps:

  • Magician
  • Priestess
  • Empress
  • Wheel of Fortune
  • Tower
  • Sun
  • World

Hermit’s Journey with Bonnie Cehovet – Gaian Tarot

Today I will be discussing one of my favorite Indies – the Gaian Tarot, by Joanna Powell Colbert. I followed the creation process of this deck online, and was impressed not only by the theme (Gaia – Mother Earth), and the artwork (which is stunning!), but by Joanna’s inherent understanding of our personal relationship to Gaia. I do have to admit that it doesn’t hurt that the inspiration for the cards comes from nature scenes on one of the San Juan Islands, here in my very own Pacific Northwest! This deck is mystickal Tarot at its very best!I carried the excitement of a small child as I waited for this deck to arrive in my mailbox. I hurried back to the house to open it, cradling it in my hands – I knew this package would be filled with wonder and magick – and was it ever!

The presentation of this deck was so amazing, it was hard to take in all at once. The cards came in a royal purple velvet Tarot bag (made by Elaine Nichols), lined with a green and purple patterned silk, with a gold drawstring. In the bag with the cards was a small sachet of mixed herbs (sage, sweetgrass, cedar and lavender), as well as a stone, shell and beach glass that were hand picked from local beaches. (I have since added a rose quartz crystal – my personal gift to each deck that I own.) I have not seen a presentation this good since I received my copy of Ellen Lorenzi-Prince’s “Tarot of the Crone”. The quality of the Tarot bag is so breathtaking that I want to take time to note that Elaine offers Tarot bags through the “Gaian Tarot” site. Elaine will soon be offering one of a kind Tarot reading cloths, also through the “Gaian Tarot” site. The “Gaian Tarot” that I purchased was a 22 card, Majors only, Limited Edition deck. Since then there has been an additional printing. Joanna is currently working on the Minor Arcana and Court Cards, which can be found on her site, so that the deck will eventually be a full 78 card deck. The magick grows and grows!

Gaian Tarot

The Gaian Tarot celebrates the living Earth and those who seek to live in harmony with Her. It is an evocative and powerful tool for accessing inner guidance. The imagery of the deck combines multicultural Goddesses and other numinous beings with the mysteries of the natural world. Each image features birds, animals, plants, trees, rocks, constellations and other aspects of nature that amplify the meaning of the card. With its structure rooted in Tarot tradition, the Gaian Tarot is the perfect deck for those who honor Gaia, the earth, as a living, sentient being and who practice an earth-centered spirituality. (from GaianTarot.com)

The Gaian Tarot is a work in progress. The 22 images of the Major Arcana are finished. The Limited (First) Edition of the Majors-Only Deck is sold out, but the Second Edition is now available for purchase.

Gina Estevez shares readings and techniques from her new book and gives helpful advice on teaching tarot classes.

She has been teaching Tarot “formally” for the last ten years, i.e., classes with multiple students – generally in metaphysical shops. Classes run the range from introductory to intermediate to advanced skills, and her newest class of last year is Tarot & Magick (not about reading the cards, but working with the archetypal energies in the deck as allies). Gina has also had the honor of presenting workshops for local covens and at Pagan gatherings in the Southeast.

You can see general class outlines at website www.geocities.com/mnemosyne77 – just click on any of the class titles to go to the outline.

I have definitely developed a better understanding of Tarot from teaching, and don’t think that I would have grown nearly as much if I only read the cards.

I’ve also learned how folks learn – that has been an adventure. These days, in each lesson, I try to incorporate something for all four learning aspects: Fire – Intuitive, Water – Emotional, Air -Intellectual, and Earth – Tactile. I provide plenty of opportunities for validation for the intuitives, as they develop the other skills they’ll need when they are having “off” days. The emotional learners need to make heart-connections with each card, and I give them lots of stories, and give them the tools to work with their own cards. The intellectuals need some order, and sometimes I even break out the flow charts and talk to the computer geek in them. And I give practical examples and hands-on experience so that the tactile folks can dive into their decks and know that it’s real. Each student may start from his/her strong point, and then when comfortable, will start assimilating the lessons through the other three methods, as well.

Tarot Spreads, Threads and Mandalas – When you’re done with Tarot 101!

Download the Scavenger HuntFrom the very first chapter, the novice reader will find powerful one-card techniques that allow for a greater understanding of each card. As for the seasoned professional, whether you use the Tarot to divine or to converse with the Divine, you are sure to fall in love with your cards all over again as you work through the spreads and exercises in this book.

  • Go on a scavenger hunt.
  • Create a mandala.
  • Ride a numerological roller coaster.
  • Weave fabulous stories using the amazing images and archetypes in your own deck.

This is your invitation to dance, dream and dare the Tarot to be far more than a “pack of cards.”

You’re a Star

The human body is the perfect template for so many spreads. In this design, use the star for a five-card reading that provides an image of where you have been and where you are heading.

  • The card in the Left Foot position represents where you have been, and the ground that you have covered.
  • The Left Hand card speaks of those things that you have received or been offered. This might include not only tangible things, but lessons or other gifts.
  • The card at the Head indicates things that are on your mind right now, including the current situation.
  • The Right Hand card represents those things that you may pay forward and gifts that you have to offer to others. It is also the hand that opens doors, or closes them, to potential futures.
  • And the Right Foot is where you appear to be going if all else stays the same.

Look at the flow of the reading. The left side represents those energies from the past that may be lingering, but are waning. The right side describes experiences for which you are preparing.

Ask yourself if you feel balanced between these incoming and outgoing energies. If your head is caught in a tug-of-war, what might you release in order to maintain your balance? Or are you not seeking balance at all? Are you bound or do you feel chained at any specific point in the reading, and how does that relate to obligations within your current situation?

Finally, decide where you shine brightest in this spread and aim that light on the other positions by combining that card in turn with any that feel less than brilliant. And discover how to shine like the star that you truly are.
