Non believers dont laugh- I experienced such things before.. it does exist uncannily.. I used to go to a old tarot card reader in Yishun and she helped me alot. Doesnt cost much either just a few dollars. But sadly she passed away.. care to share your experiences anyone? know of anyone good I can try out?

What time period does 3 of swords tarot card represent?

I’ve been getting very accurate infomation when i’m doing my tarot card readings. And I was wondering who is guiding me to pick the cards. I think it’s a spirit or sometimes a ghost is luring me. Is that correct?

I was recently given a pack of Dragon Tarot cards (Pracownik/Donaldson). Unfortunately, I am missing the booklet to the deck, along with the arcana card, Justice.
I don’t need the entire deck, considering I already have it. I would just like to know if anyone out there may be able to help me get my hands on a Justice card to complete the deck, and the booklet if possible.

i would like to work as an online tarot card reader, but have no idea who would hire for this. If you know anyone please let me know. Thanks.

I’m interested in tarot card reading and learning to do it myself but there are so many different types of decks out there, how do i choose? Is there a way to find out which one is the right deck for me or does it even matter?

Does anybody know how much a Tarot Card costs and where to buy one? I’m living in the Philippines, Makati. Thanks.

I would like to have a tarot card reading and I know a lady who charges £25 for 20 minuets. I was wondered if this is a good price or not? This lady has also refused to give me a tarot card reading in the past so I thought I may also look else where. What do you think?

I am looking for a work at home opportunity, offering tarot card readings for a direct line/dispatch service. I prefer to have the flexibility to log in anytime and work with a reputable company.

In European countries such as France, there are Tarot cards sold to play actual card games similar to Spades and Bridge. According to most historians, Tarot cards were originally intended for card games and not for divination. However in countries such as the US, Tarot cards are only sold for fortune telling purposes and most Americans only associate Tarot with divination. Do you believe this situation should change? Would you play actual card games with Tarot? Should Tarot publishers supply game rules with Tarot decks?

In the book that came with my Tarot cards it says the "Positive" meaning if the card and the "Negative". Am I supposed to you the Negative part when the card is reversed? And if so, how do you know if the card is reversed in the first place.
I usually just shuffle and cut the cards and deal them out in a spread. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks so much for the answers!

I am trying to learn how to learn how to do tarot card readings with regular playing cards, but every website I have gone to so far have not said what the inverted meanings of all the cards are. I know it would be a lot easier to just go out and buy a regular deck of tarot cards, but my parents refuse to allow me to get them. Help please?

I have been between these two choices for long time, none of them easy, but I found out I have better connection with being self-employed, that is more possibility to do my own business.

I played tarot card, everytime I did it, always showed doing my own business has positive answer, is it strange?

Time is running fast, I can't go in between, I understand high risk of doing my own business, but that direction has better support, should I trust my intuition?
I am scared… help!

I’m sending out an all points bulletin in hopes that someone might have some images of the François Heri Tarot de Besançon as shown here in Kaplan’s Encyclopedia of Tarot:

heri.jpg

This is the closest relative the to the Jean Noblet tarot, they are obviously related, possibly one a copy of the other or more likely based on a similar source.  There are details on the Heri deck that I find fascinating, but all I have to work with is this poor quality scan. If anyone can help me out with better versions of the François Heri, I would be very grateful!

Years ago, when I first started exploring tarot history, I came to the conclusion that Petrarch’s Triumphs were probably a key element in the creation of tarot. This wasn’t a new or original idea, I think most historians certainly see a connection between tarot and triumphs, it’s been a standard foundation of research for decades, at least. The question really is whether Petrarch’s triumphs match cards from the tarot, and specifically Petrach’s most famous series:

The Triumph of Love

trionfi_love.jpg

The Triumph of Chastity

trionfi_chastity.jpg

The Triumph of Death

trionfi_death.jpg

The Triumph of Fame

trionfi_fame.jpg

The Triumph of Time

trionfi_time.jpg

The Triumph of Eternity

trionfi_eternity.jpg

I think three are easy to match, (here with the “Charles VI Tarot” from the 15th century).

The Triumph of Love with “Love” (or sometimes called “The Lovers”).

trionfi_love.jpg

[singlepic id=32 w=225 h=600 float=]

The Triumph of Death with “Death” from the Tarot.

trionfi_death.jpg

[singlepic id=38 w=225 h=600 float=]

The Triumph of Time with “Time” (or sometimes called “The Hermit”) from the Tarot.

trionfi_time.jpg

[singlepic id=35 w=225 h=600 float=]

By the way, I’m not necessarily trying to match these two sets of images graphically (although by nature there would be some similarity) as much as generally associating the iconography and concept.

Let’s consider matching The Triumph of Eternity with “Judgement”:

trionfi_eternity.jpg

[singlepic id=43 w=225 h=600 float=]

Generally, I think this is a pretty good match. It’s easy enough for me to see how “Eternity” would be expressed with the image of the dead rising from the graves on Judgement Day. If we go with this, then I would suggest that The Triumph of Fame would probably be a good match for “The World”:

trionfi_fame.jpg

[singlepic id=44 w=225 h=600 float=]

In this case, the iconography does strike me as somewhat similar, certainly there is something about the posture of the main characters that feels related.

Overall, matching Eternity with Judgement and Fame with The World feels pretty good to me, and I generally feel comfortable suggesting this. Today when I was looking at the image of The Triumph of Eternity shown in this post (there are many, many other versions, just google “Triumph of Eternity”), I realised that this image actually reminded me a little of The World as seen on the Marselle Tarot. This time, I’ll set the image next to the Jean Noblet Tarot from 1650:

trionfi_eternity.jpg

[singlepic id=46 w=225 h=600 float=]

The most striking similarity is the inclusion of “the four evangelists“: the Eagle representing St. John, the Bull representing St. Luke, the Lion representing St. Mark, and the Angel representing St. Matthew. There is also some conjecture if the figure on the Marselle Tarot World card might, in some early decks (like the Jean Noblet, Jean Dodal and Jean Payen), might be a representation of Christ. In the Jacques Vieville tarot from Paris, 1650, the figure is even more masculine and most notably has a halo:

trionfi_eternity.jpg

Jacques Vieville Tarot - The World, Paris 1650

So, maybe the Triumph of Eternity is better matched with The World? I think many people would agree. The Triumph of Eternity is the last in the series Triumphs, just as The World is the last in the series of Tarot trumps.

What can we make of Fame then? The most obvious card to assign to The Triumph of Fame would most likely be “The Chariot”, which was also called “The Triumphal Chariot” in early references to the card. Let’s look at this pair:

trionfi_fame.jpg

[singlepic id=33 w=225 h=600 float=]

This image of The Chariot from “Charles VI Tarot” shows what appears to be a war hero dresssed in armor,  carrying a battle  with sword at side. It’s not much of a match visually to the triumph of Fame, I think substantially less so than the match between Fame and The World card. Yet, conceptually it is a pretty good match with the war hero returning home triumphant and we can assume, famous.

My dissatisfaction with this arrangement is that I want to “use” The Chariot elsewhere… I want to match it to the Triumph of Chastity. For this, I’m going to use The Chariot from the “Cary-Yale Visconti” Tarot dated to the mid-1400s.

trionfi_chastity.jpg

[singlepic id=47 w=225 h=600 float=]

Several other early decks feature a woman in the Chariot, but  the person is quite changable, through time portrayed as Venus, Mars, Mercury and others. One reason to like this arrangement is that The Chariot almost always follows Love, just as Chastity triumphs Love. To be honest though, when comparing this image with the Triumph of Fame, I’m back to thinking that they might make a better match after all:

trionfi_fame.jpg

[singlepic id=47 w=225 h=600 float=]

No matter how I arrange the cards, I never get a completely satisfactory match. If I were going to suggest a combination, for me the most successful one would be:

The Triumph of Love with The Lovers

The Triumph of Chastity with The Chariot

The Triumph of Death with Death

The Triumph of Fame with The World

The Triumph of Time with Time

The Triumph of Eternity with Judgement

What do you think?

21.jpgAn exploration of this deck is long overdue.

It is generally accepted that this one of a kind deck was originally published in the early 1600s. If this is correct, it would mean that it is older than any existing Tarot de Marseille (TdM), (the Jean Noblet Tarot is dated to around 1650, and the Jean Dodal to the early 1700s). Of course, the Cary Sheet indicates that, (at least elements of), the TdM style has been around since around 1500. The Tarot de Paris is usually considered the oldest existing deck that still contains all 78 original cards.

The Tarot de Paris (TdP) follows the numbering of the TdM, and like the TdM has titles and numbers printed on the cards. Some of the cards are clearly related to the TdM, but many have unique designs or are related to other decks. In some ways, the deck reminds me of the Jacques Vieville, it has a crude and wild streak, but sometimes the artwork is incredibly rich and beautiful. Some of the detail in the facsimile version published by Grimaud in 1985 is difficult to see clearly as the colours used in the original have darkened obscuring some of the lines and making some of the artwork difficult to decipher.

An excellent summary of the deck exists on Andy’s Playing Cards. I’d like to take it a step further and discuss some of the details. This is one of the most important of our early decks, and one of the least known and discussed. Unfortunately, the deck is very difficult to find now, although copies can still be found occasionally on ebay.

Here are the 22 Trumps to enjoy, let’s explore this treasure together in the Tarot History Forum.

The Seven Soul Centers with with Robert Place – Feb. 18, 2009

The theory of the seven psychic centers in the body, commonly called the Chakras, is thought to originate in India. However, the oldest writing in India that describes it dates from the second century AD. In the West we can find them described in detail in the writings of Plato in the fourth century BC, and can find similar ideas in The Egyptian Book of the Dead. The Greek philosopher, Pythagoras – the first man to call himself a philosopher – used the seven notes of his musical scale to bring the soul centers of his patients into harmony and health and realized that these seven centers figured in our spiritual development as well.

The Symbolic Origins of the Tarot: Mar 18 & 25 2009

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries occultists competed with one another in the creation of spurious histories and associations for the Tarot. Not all of their insights were wrong but their histories, were wrong, and their alphabetical and astrological associations for the trumps are clearly an arbitrary code that mostly ignores the historic symbolic intent of the illustrations that appear on each trump. At their worst, the occultists’ associations have become a wall of confusion that blocks one from appreciating the mystical heritage that is preserved in the deck. Historic evidence indicates that the Tarot was created in northern Italy in the early fifteenth century. It was a work of popular art and matches for all of its icons can be found in the art of that era. In this class we will examine this evidence and we will attempt to clear away false assumptions and see the allegory presented in the Tarot as the artists who created the earliest decks would have viewed them. What will come to light is that one need not embellish the facts to demonstrate that the Tarot does express a mystical philosophy and in spite of its birth in the comparatively recent fifteenth century it is connected to an ancient Neoplatonic wisdom tradition.

Robert Place sees the Tarot as a spiritual tool that works, through its archetypal images, to assist our Higher Self to guide us to enlightened choices and spiritual wisdom. He recommends three card readings as a Tarot staple, and sets out a guideline for interpreting them called “The Seven Patterns.” These patterns include: linear, choice, central origin, central destination, the central problem and the central teacher.

The Relationship Triangle Spread with Robert Place: Apr 15, 2009

Tarot readers are most commonly asked for advice about love or career. By treating these questions as a relationship between the querent and another person, company, or institution this spread can handle both topics. This spread can be applied to relationships between the querent and a lover, a boss, or another person, a job, a home, a culture, a city, or another environment. Instead of predicting the future, it gives insight into what each party is thinking and how they are interacting. Then the cards can provide insight from the Higher Self and tell the querent how to improve the relationship or other advice. This is a truly versatile spread that is capable of bringing insight and guidance to any situation.

The Tens by Ginny Hunt

So if nine is the finale, why the ten? Because ten is neither the end nor the beginning, but a transition between an ending and a beginning to a higher order of things. See, the number ten is the start of a whole new order of numbers and the culmination of the numbers that come before it.

All the base ten numbering systems in existence from ancient times such as Hebrew and Greek systems use the number ten as this natural transition between the numbers that come before into the numbers that come after. A look at the number values assigned to the Hebrew and Greek letters show that the letters were given values from one to ten, then increasing in tens to 100 then increasing by 100’s and so on. Numbering by tens is natural for us given our ten fingers which are quite useful for adding and subtracting. You have to re-use fingers when you get past ten, so it starts a new “order.” So ten represents “completeness of order.” It symbolizes a cycle has completed and all is where it should be. As such it represents the perfection of divine order. (read the full post)

Cold Reading Definition from The Skeptic’s Dictionary by Robert Todd Carroll

Cold reading refers to a set of techniques used by professional manipulators to get a subject to behave in a certain way or to think that the cold reader has some sort of special ability that allows him to “mysteriously” know things about the subject. Cold reading goes beyond the usual tools of manipulation: suggestion and flattery. In cold reading, salespersons, hypnotists, advertising pros, faith healers, con men, and some therapists bank on their subject’s inclination to find more meaning in a situation than there actually is. (read more)

Mary Greer joins me to talk about Cold Readings and Mentalist techniques with the aim of taking back some of the territory taken over by those with ill intentions.

From Mary’s Blog – Cold Reading and Tarot, Part 2

Part 2: Hijacking What It Means to Be Human

(Read Part 1 to learn about mentalists, skeptics and cold reading.)

Imagine my surprise when I discovered there are at least a half-dozen extremely expensive books marketed by mentalists on tarot, of which I’d never heard in my forty-plus years collecting tarot books. And, they were written by and for professional tarot readers that I didn’t even know existed as a self-identified group. Of course, I was aware there are fraudulent tarot readers who deliberately used cold reading techniques to con their marks. Naively, I had assumed, though, that cold reading was used mostly by fake mediums and clairvoyants (as in the 19th century) and by mentalist entertainers. I had no idea that tarot was regularly taught as a scam except among some phone psychics and those storefront psychics who used it to extort money for removing curses, etc.—a whole different, albeit related, enterprise. [Note: some mentalists are also ethical tarot readers, and not all mentalists deny the paranormal. I am also not referring, in most of what follows, to ethical mentalists who are honest about using mental tricks.]

I The Magician – The Electromagnetic Force

The Quantum Magician is the Electromagnetic Force, encompassing the whole spectrum of different rays, including visible light, infrared, ultraviolet, gamma rays, X-rays, radio waves and microwaves.
The Magician manipulates and formulates energy, making the invisible visible. He has the ability to make something out of nothing – to act creatively – which can seem magical from the outside. He brings consciousness and illumination to mystery, acting as a bridge between the inchoate sea of the unconscious, and material reality. Whenever we create anything we invoke the Magician archetype.

XVIII The Moon – Extra Dimensions

If string theory (see the Star card) is correct, all the fundamental particles in the universe comprise of tiny loops, or strings, that vibrate at different frequencies. The early versions of string theory suggested that strings have only one dimension, but then superstring theory proposed that strings might vibrate in ten dimensions! How is this possible? Well, apart from the three dimensions of ordinary space, and one of time, the theory claims that the other six dimensions are curled up, or compressed into a very tiny space. The strings wind themselves around these “curled up” dimensions like a kind of cosmic cat’s cradle.
Because these other dimensions occupy such an unimaginably small space, we may move through them all the time without realizing it. The Moon represents this idea that there is much more to the world than we are usually aware of. These inaccessible extra dimensions are like the extra dimensions of our lives; hints, hunches, movements out of the corners of our eye. The Moon represents a fearful mystery to those who like everything to be explained. To the more intuitively or psychically-minded, this sense of something extra, something more than we can detect with our everyday, physical senses, is no surprise. The Moon shows up when the indefinable starts demanding attention in our consciousness – and to the conscious mind this can seem like a threat.
